Misty Jiangnan, Enchanting Wuxi. On the morning of April 17th, the “Understanding China, Perceiving Wuxi” event was successfully held. International student representatives from our university were invited to participate in the event to experience Wuxi’s intangible cultural heritage.
The students first visited Tangyuan in Yanjiaqiao Village, where they learned about the history of Wuxi’s industrial and commercial development and the stories of the Tang family. They then had the opportunity to learn and watch performances of Xiju (Wuxi Opera) at the Yanjiaqiao Cultural Activity Center. The international students dressed in Xiju costumes and diligently practiced basic movements under the guidance of their teachers. Zhao Yixi from Myanmar said, “Learning Xiju helped me understand the meaning of ‘one minute on stage requires ten years of efforts off stage.’ It was meaningful and enjoyable to experience Chinese traditional opera culture”. In the afternoon, students visited the picturesque Doushan Village, where they learned the art of tea from the teachers at Baicha Garden (White Tea Garden). Through tea brewing, appreciation, aroma sniffing, and tasting, they gained a deeper understanding of China’s profound tea culture. Lin Xu from Guyana expressed that this event allowed him to explore and learn about various distinctive Chinese cultural elements and enhanced his understanding of Wuxi. Wuxi not only boasts of beautiful landscapes but also possesses rich cultural heritage.
The “Understanding China, Perceiving Wuxi” series of activities aim to enhance people-people connectivity through diversified activities, publicize and promote Wuxi through various channels, and disseminate Chinese culture from multiple perspectives. The School of International Education will continue to explore local cultural and educational resources, strive to cultivate international students with an “Global Vision, Future Mission and Unchained Affection” and enhance the influence and impact of Chinese civilization.
